The long Utah winter is finally over and has given way to warm weather, and homeowners often make various tweaks or changes to their spaces when this time of year rolls around. One common consideration here, especially in homes where children and/or pets are present, is making some minor alterations to your mudroom and its various storage and other uses.
At Precision Closets & Garage, mudroom storage is just one of numerous forms of home and garage storage we're happy to assist clients around Salt Lake City and Park City with on a regular basis. Whether you're looking to combine a laundry room and mudroom, improve your overall storage or just make some seasonal tweaks, we're here to help. Here are some common ways homeowners switch up their mudroom for the warm weather.
For those who utilize hangers and hooks in their mudroom as part of an overall storage solution, there are a few things to keep in mind as the weather warms up. Heavy winter coats and snow gear become less necessary but may still be needed occasionally—consider using smaller wall-mounted hangers or adding some additional hooks so you can switch out heavier items for lighter gear.
In many cases, you'll want to have a couple hooks reserved for the warmest months for swimsuits and other light clothing items that don't need to be hung up but still must stay organized, such as flip-flops or sandals.
The cold of winter does a number on home interiors, including the mudroom—take some time now to inspect the area for any damage. Flooring may have suffered over time, and if you need to switch things up, now is the perfect time.
Wall treatments such as paint, wallpaper or tile may also require some attention—you'll want to make sure there's no wash-out from heavy rains or other damage due to winter weather elements.
Another common tip of the trade for homeowners is to re-evaluate cubby use in your mudroom when warm weather arrives. Cubbies can be used for a wide variety of items, but with warmer months on the horizon, it may be necessary to switch out things like winter mittens and scarves for items such as beach gear or outdoor toys.
In some cases, you may even switch out the actual cubbies themselves, if you have multiple options available. You may choose to put away the heavier cubbies used for winter months and switch them out with some lighter materials in the warm weather.
As you think about seasonal changes to your mudroom, take a look at the various bin options you may have available. Bins are a great way to store items away neatly but still keep them organized and accessible—switching out winter gear for summer sports or recreational items is also an option with bins.
In addition, some of these bins may need to be re-evaluated if they are damaged in any way due to the cold of winter—make sure that these are still in good shape and capable of withstanding whatever comes their way this summer.
Certain accessories become much more common and necessary in the warm weather—sunglasses, hats, and caps are all items that may need to be kept near the mudroom door. Consider adding hooks or shelves for these items so they can continue to stay organized as well.
If you already have these hooks in place for winter items like gloves and hats, you can also switch these out for the warmer months.
If you have children and/or pets in the home, toy storage is an important consideration as well. Depending on the size of your mudroom, you may need to add some additional shelves or bins here to accommodate all these items.
Remember that depending on the ages of your children and the type of toys they play with, whatever solutions you put in place should be able to withstand some wear and tear.
By making these minor adjustments to your mudroom, you can ensure that the area will stay organized and functional throughout the summer months and beyond. Happy organizing!
